Our Apparatus

833: QRV (Quick Response Vehicle)

833 is our QRV, a 2013 Chevy Tahoe, which responds primarily to medical calls, but also responds to rescues if a trailer or boat needs to be pulled, as well as carries up to 6 additional personnel to the scene. Prior to major overhauls in our SAR/ Wilderness equipment, it was the primary apparatus for searches. You may see 833 often in the community, as it can be utilized as a take-home vehicle for responders who are available to answer all calls during the time that they have it.

834: Support

834 is a 2008 Chevy Impala, and serves as our unmarked support vehicle. It does not carry any rescue or medical equipment, as the vehicle is intended to be used for trainings, long-distance travel, and administrative tasks where the member is not available for calls. Why do we keep it unmarked? Since it doesn't respond to calls, we can save money by keeping it as a regular ole' car, allowing us to invest into other needed equipment and operational expenses.

835: Light Rescue

835 is a 1995 Ford Super Duty. Our oldest unit, this truck holds additional equipment to support rescues (extra rope, rope gear, Rescue42 Struts, pickets, air bags, etc). The only unique equipment that no other apparatus has is some of the Water Rescue equipment. While only our secondary rescue unit, the truck is actually capable of independently completing and handling various vehicle, agricultural/ farm, and other rescues.

836: Medium Rescue

836 is our primary rescue truck, a 2009 GMC 5500, and contains the majority of equipment for all of our rescues except water rescue. 836 exclusively carries our advanced vehicle rescue equipment, our Arizona Vortex Tripod, our SAR/ Wilderness equipment, and our light tower. It runs first to all calls that have a confirmed or a potential rescue.

837: Ambulance

This 2005 Ford E-350 is the last 4-wheel drive van-style ambulance in Surry County. 837 provides EMT-level transport in some of the most difficult areas. Though it looks outdated, Mountain Park has a high number of thin roadways and difficult terrain that regularly benefit from this style of ambulance. It carries a wide range of life-saving medical equipment, and can only be operated by credentialled members of our squad.

83-atv1: all-terrain vehicle

ATV1 is a 2003 Suzuki 4x4. When paired with it's stokes basket trailer, this four-wheeler is capable of extricating patients from complex and dangerous environments rapidly. It has proven to effectively navigate difficult terrain while keeping the patient safe. Attendants can ride on the stokes basket trailer to provide medical assistance to the victim onboard.

83-boat1: water rescue boat

BOAT1 is a Rescue One flat-bottom connector boat, with two "John Boats" secured to the trailer to deploy on shallow or supplemental water missions. BOAT1 carries a variety of Water Rescue equipment, as well as provides shade and shelter to rescuers and victims while on the water. Additionally, BOAT1 is designed to connect to other Rescue One boats to form a single larger boat or "water command/ facility", though ours has never had the need to do so. While motor powered, the two John Boats rely on paddles, and they do not have any specialized equipment such as rope, drag hooks, a dive deck, or other items. But nevertheless, they can be loaded with needed equipment and access areas to small, shallow, or dangerous for BOAT1.
