About Us

What do we do?

What exactly does Mountain Park Rescue Squad do? Well, it's not always an easy answer. First and foremost, we are a technical rescue agency and Emergency Medical Services agency.

As a technical rescue agency, we train volunteers to make access to and rescue patients from extreme environments, whether its inside a crushed vehicle, in the water, in the middle of the wilderness, or off a cliff face. Rescuers are both trained by us, and certified by the state to become a Technical Rescuer (TR), the official state title for anyone who completes their certification.

As a Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agency, we provide both first response and back-up transport capabilities for our area. First response means that we respond with a paid medic crew that is funded by the county (Surry County EMS, for example). We assist with life saving skills and try to shorten the response time for patients. We also have an ambulance, allowing us to transport patients as needed.

But we don't stop there. We embrace our status as a non-profit, and often seek to engage with our community through events, education, and fundraisers. We are also seeking to pioneer new ways of rescue, and adapting to the modern challenges of volunteerism. You can read more about all of these things across our website!

[ems]

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a significant part of what we do. In fact, the majority of the calls we run are EMS calls. Whether the problem is Cardiac Arrest, breathing difficulty, chest pain, bone fractures, fall, or any variety of other medical emergencies, we respond to our people in need.

[technical rescue]

Technical Rescue (TR), the science of using creative-yet-standard techniques to get people out of dangerous situations and into the hands of medical care, is our specialty. The most popular example of this work is using the Jaws of Life to cut someone out of a vehicle, (formally referred to as vehicle extrication). But our operations don't stop there. Rescue exists in the wilderness, on the water, up the mountain and down in the confined space. If a problem can occur, then so can a rescue.
