Current Projects
Our First Building
Currently, we rent out part of the building from Mountain Park Volunteer Fire Department. As our community grows, so have ourselves and our neighbors here at the FD. We are currently seeking out to design, construct, and fund a building of our own!
We currently own the land directly across from the fire department, and plan to build there. There are several key concepts we are keeping in mind:
Community Utilization: We want this building to not just be ours, but our community's as well. We want to design the building so that our neighbors and citizens in our community can use the building for events or gatherings.
Training Oriented: We want this building to facilitate advanced training. While not all training projects will be available right away, we hope that certain features will enable us to train harder and focus on more intensive skills than ever before.
ALS Capabilities: Surry County EMS has a series of outposts for their Advanced Life Support (ALS) units. While there is no garuntee, we hope to be able to host an ALS unit right here in Mountain Park. Currently, the closest units are hosted in Dobson (Rockford St), Elkin (N. Bridge St), and Beulah (W. Pine St).
Rope Rescue Rennovation Project
We are only a few items away from reaching our goal of developing the "One-Man Rescue" concept, the central goal of the Rope Rescue Rennovation Project (RRRP). The core of this project is both training and equipment. Training is already scheduled and in the works. For equipment, we are still looking into certain pieces of equipment, including a PETZL ASAP Lock for each of our OMPs (One-Man Packs, the blue ones shown in the photo). We also hope to include more advanced descending/ progress capture devices in the OMPs.
Each OMP is designed to allow a single rescuer to almost entirely set-up a rescue, or it can enable the attendant of a rescue to fully rescue the victim (of course, with other rigging in place).
Wilderness Expansion Project
The Wilderness Expansion Project (WEP) was designed to bring Mountain Park Rescue Squad to the front of wilderness rescues. We have redesigned our protcols to transform our approach from the traditional "wilderness rescue" to a "Search and Rescue (SAR)" team approach. Training and minor remaining equipment remain missing, but are soon expected to be completed. This project will allow us to be the leading SAR experts in Surry County, and we hope to be able to offer our services to our neighboring counties in Yadkin, Wilkes, and Alleghany.
