What are the age qualifications?
We accept applications for those age 14 and up, though most training won't be allowed until you are at least 16. There is no maximum age limit so long as you are dedicated and willing to help!
What is the application process?
Begin by filling out the membership application below. From there, an officer with the rescue squad will reach out to you within a week, and will have you speak with and interview with three existing members of the squad (known as the membership committee). Within two weeks, you will be called back in to be voted on by the squad members. In the meantime, we will be doing a criminal background check, and confirming credentials and training (if applicable). If you are voted in by the majority of the squad members, the congrats! You are officially a rescuer with Mountain Park Rescue Squad!
What experience, training, and education do I need?
To start with, you won't need any kind of experience, training, or education. If you are 18 or older, having a valid NC driver's license will be the only thing you will need to attend trainings and run calls. From the moment you start, we will work with you on starting a class schedule to help you get a EMS credential (EMT, AEMT, Paramedic), your Technical Rescuer (TR), and any other related classes you find interest in (specialties, command, debriefing, etc).
I'd like more information before I apply. Who can I contact?
You can submit general inquiries on our homepage, or you can email us at mountainpark@rescue83.org. You can also show up to one of our regular meetings: every Thursday, from 7pm to 10pm. As a volunteer organization, our office is typically not occupied and most administrative work is done remotely, but you can try to give us a call at our office at (336)-874-7911.
I'm already in another department, squad, or agency. Can I still join?
As long as you can dedicate the time to a second department and can make the weekly meetings, you are allowed to be a member of as many other organizations as you want.
What are the requirements once I join?
You will have 1 year to get your Technical Rescuer (TR) Certification or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Credential. By 2 years, you are required to have your EMT credential regardless. Thus, we recommend starting with your EMT, and then exploring your TR certification later. Every quarter (3 month period), you must have at least 9 training hours and run at least 2 calls in our district.
[Commitment Requirements]
When you join Mountain Park Rescue Squad as a rescuer, You will be expected to make the following minimum commitments to your community:
Get your Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate and credential within 2 years of joining. This is a 6 month class that requires being able to:
Pass a college placement test at the local community college
Maintain good grades and attendance: there are day and night classes that meet twice a week and 3 weekend classes.
Participate in clinical rotations (24 hours of "ride time")
Pass a state exam to earn your NC-EMT credential
Get any certification within 1 year of joining. This can be either your EMT certification, or you can get your Technical Rescuer (TR) certification before pursuing your EMT
Commit 36 hours a year to training. This is the equivalent to coming to a regular training once a month, with opportunities for training at least weekly. Trainings on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Thursday nights of every month.
Respond to minimum of 8 calls per year. This averages to about 8 hours per year.
